TOP 5: Vintage threads.

My love for vintage clothing revolves around the thrill of the chase. I’ll happily dig through mountains of frumpy, ill-fitting frocks, because I know that a Eureka moment is never too far away.  My favourite places for vintage are London’s markets: Portobello on a Saturday, and the Sunday Upmarket on a Sunday. Bliss.

1. Spitalfields Market on a Thursday is a multicoloured goldmine.

2. A common sight around London’s Brick Lane.

3. Onesie swimsuit + fur? A cracking combination.

3. I like the yellow ones!

4. Retro-glam by Georgia Nash. Saucy!

TOP 5: London Fashion Week legs.

I spent Saturday afternoon at Somerset House, engaging in high-quality people watching.  Turns out that I was mainly watching their legs.

1. Badass leggings and sexy booties.

2. Capes, pantaloons, flares, feathers, snakey legs and leopard print. Woah.

3. Leather, fur, Chanel and Louboutins.

4. A black-clad photographer and her technicolour subject.

5. A shining example of laid back cool.

TOP 5: Floral adornments.

London Fashion Week has just kicked off. Turns out they don’t mind flowers, either.

1. Some very elaborate bling.

2. Glam headgear for Queens of the Desert.

3. My White hole-punched top and 60s style lace dress.

4. Wooden laser cut necklace, from Spitalfields Market, London.

5. Hawaiian night.

TOP 5: Dapper gents.

A diary entry from 2005: ‘Oh lord please give me a boy who can dress!’

1. Karl.

2. An in-store display at Selfridge’s.

3. Attention to detail is crucial. See: Buttonhole, well-groomed mustache.

4. The necessary skills.

4. Terrifing military chic.

TOP 5: Window dressing.

You can’t judge a book by its cover, but you can definitely judge a shop by its window display.

1. The consistently colourful Olga de Polga.

2. Mambo drawing for Agnes b. on Lamb Street.

3. Cheap snacks and expensive bags at Selfridge’s, of course.

4. Dress + windows = window dressing.

5. The land of Oz at Harrods, Christmas 2009.

TOP 5: Clothes clash.

I like to dress in vivid technicolour, with stripes and spots fighting for attention. Admittedly, this is more easily achieved in the summer, when I’m not wrapped in a black shroud of a coat, and bangles don’t get in the way of long sleeves. Maybe that’s what I mean by spring colour.

1. My friend Harriet always gets it right. (Even the seat fabric works for her.)

2. I dress like a strange elf when I’m at home. I’m sure it amuses the postman.

3. Colour blind tourist mode, turned up to the max. (Note heat-stricken face.)

4. I wore this to an ’80s party. (And that leopard print thing? It’s a bodysuit.)

5. A loud pile of legging laundry.

p.s. Today’s the last day to submit a photo this week! Check the details over here.

TOP 5: Flappers.

One thing I love about London is that it gives me plenty of opportunities to indulge my vintage-glamour fantasies. These photos were taken at two different events, here and here. Both involved feathers, pearls, and moonshine served in teacups. (Next time, I think I’d be up for a 1940s party, just to switch things up a bit.)

1. Londoners take fancy dress very seriously. I respect that.

2. All that’s missing here is a long cigarette filter and a brassy attitude.

3. Modern flappers wear PVC frills.

4. The lady on the right won first prize in the pageant, FYI. Well done, miss.

5. Perfection. Feather head dresses are very underrated in this day and age.

TOP 5: Big hair.

The Greek slang term for an afro is ‘afana’. I really like this word; it gives off the same vibe as the name ‘Mufasa‘, which is pretty damn appropriate here.

1. One half of a Persian Jedward?

2. If you don’t know this song, then you’d better get acquainted with it NOW.

3. A Marie-Antionette for the modern age.

4. This is what most Athenian teenagers like nowadays.

5. I love ginger hair, but this is taking it to another level.

p.s. Have you submitted a photo for this week’s theme?

TOP 5: Glasses.

I associate sunglasses with airports. This is because I usually travel alone, get bored, and end up loitering in Duty Free shops where I try on many, many pairs of sunglasses. I rarely buy a pair, but I feel that this activity is good background research for the next purchase I make. Yah? Yah.

1. ‘Fly Eyes’: Sold in a toy shop near you, and guaranteed to make you dizzy.

2. Glasses: Not just for the living.

3. A glamorous pair we dug up at Spitalfields Market.

4. Putting on her specs at exactly 11:46pm (see watch).

5. black and white accessories: frames, lenses, nails, and cig.

TOP 5: Hats.

My mother says that hats don’t suit her, thanks to her skinny skinny face. My mother is also convinced that all hats suit me, and so keeps buying me more of them (in order to live her hat-life vicariously through me). This suits me just fine, frankly. I love hats.

1. A pink beauty from the vintage store.

2. A gent, properly attired.

3. A classic Panama hat at the beach.

4. Friendly advice: ‘Beware of the DUCK HAT baring, indie-rocker’.

5. In England it’s a woolly hat. In Canada, it’s a tuque. In Australia, a beanie.
